School Gate Limited is a new company that has been formed with the specific aim of assisting school governing bodies to undertake their responsibilities in a more effective way.

Over the past 15 years the responsibilities of governors has increased considerably. The governing body is now held accountable on a whole range of issues including staffing, finance, buildings and curriculum. However, the overriding responsibility is to ensure that raising standards and the welfare of the children generally, is central to all their decision making.

Effective governing bodies have a direct impact on the success of the school by setting the climate for improvement. This is now recognised by Ofsted in the inspection framework. In judging how well a school is led and managed, inspectors are required to evaluate and report on how well the governing body fulfils its statutory responsibilities and accounts for the performance and improvement of the school.
